Building Financial ConfidenceLesson 4 of 15

Lesson 4 · About 7 minutes

Build a Small Safety Cushion

A safety cushion is money set aside for something unplanned. There is no universal starting amount. Even a small amount may reduce the impact of an unexpected expense, and saving may not be possible every month.

Make the plan fit your life

  • Choose a first goal based on an expense that matters to you.
  • Start with an amount that does not take away from immediate needs.
  • Pause or change the plan when income or expenses change.
  • If automatic transfers could cause an overdraft, consider a manual approach.

Optional practice tool

Try a small savings estimate

These amounts are not saved and disappear when you leave the page.

Which approach feels most realistic right now?

You may choose “learn first.” Saving money today is not required to complete this lesson.
